BACKGROUND

Helen Retynsky Kamins, an accomplished artist from an early age, began formal art training at the age of 8.

After graduating with a BFA degree cum laude from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Ms. Kamins moved to the Boston area and proceeded to advance through the commercial design industry, including holding the position of Corporate Art Director for a fortune 500 Company.

Desiring a greater challenge, Kamins studied at M.I.T., Boston University, and Northeastern University in order to learn the newest technologies relating to the visual arts. Becoming a pioneer in the computer graphics field, she traveled extensively from 1983 to 1986 consulting for clients including 3M, Digital, Libby Owens Ford, and General Electric.  She then established a production facility in Boston, HR GRAPHICS, Inc., which serviced the video and interactive media industries for over 10 years.  Kamins was known for her technical rendering capabilities, and often gravitated towards educational projects.  She art directed and illustrated a videotape series of open-heart surgical procedures for the Childrens Hospital in Boston that was distributed worldwide.  In 1996, choosing to spend more time to raise her children, Helen left the graphics industry and returned to her fine arts work.

HR Kamins’ work can be found in private collections in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Tokyo and London. She resides on Cape Ann, Massachusetts with her two sons. The artist’s studio, ART2000®, located on scenic route 127 just north of Boston, and is open by appointment.
  Commissioned work is welcomed.

"I love the brilliant color applications... and, of course, the fluidity of the pieces"

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

A lifelong passion of traveling and studying the natural world fuels my creativity.  My oil paintings are primarily created en plein air.  Painting outdoors on site allows the paintings to become imbued with the particular atmosphere of the site, both physical and spiritual.  This can result in imagery ranging from the serene to the effervescent.

By living in the Gloucester area and frequenting Provincetown my entire life, I find myself falling into the continuum of American Impressionists.  I too am enamored with the unusual ‘warm light’ found here.

A consistent theme in my work is the juxtaposition of orderliness to the untamed.  Brushstrokes in the paintings reveal perpetual interaction between careful, controlled applications to flamboyant and bold strokes.

The words ‘confident and vibrant’ have been used to describe my paintings. Draftsmansip skills were gained while generating photo-realistic artwork in my youth followed by many years as a professional illustrator. The 'vibrant’ aspect is probably an expression of appreciation and joy from having survived somr medical difficulties.

"HR KAMINS' art work is a unique blend of virtuosity and substance.  Her powerful, visually dramatic themes (e.g. natural vs. man-made, turbulent vs. serene) send shivers down my spine long before my conscious mind has a chance to understand why."
